ADU FAQs: Answers to Common Questions About Accessory Dwelling Units

What is an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU)?

Pacd homes are ADUs.

Also known as Additional Residential Unit (ARU), an ADU is a living unit or self-contained dwelling located on the same property as a primary residential unit. ADUs can provide additional housing options, increase property value, and contribute to addressing housing shortages or accommodating multigenerational living arrangements.

We’ve completely reimagined construction to come up with innovative solutions to deep-rooted industry problems.

Pacd’s materials and building system are what make us unique.

Our homes are made up of lightweight components that can be rapidly assembled by hand without heavy machinery and skilled trades. This greatly reduces the long build time, high costs, and excessive waste associated with traditional construction.

Each step and component of our build process is carefully thought out to minimise material waste. We also produce far less GHGs than traditional construction: there’s no shipment of heavy materials and no requirement for large diesel equipment.

Pacd interiors include eco-friendly features, such as low-flow water fixtures, energy-efficient appliances, and electric air-source heat pumps for heating and cooling.

Our homes are designed with quickly changing climate conditions and sustainability in mind. For example, our walls are engineered to reduce cooling needs and can withstand extreme weather conditions.

A few factors help make pacd homes an affordable choice:

  • Rapid assembly time and low waste building system
  • Durable materials for components and finishes minimises repair costs
  • ADUs require no land development and are less costly to build than traditional homes
  • Installation costs are much lower without the need for heavy machinery
  • Features such as LED lighting, ADU-specific HVAC heat pump, airtight construction, and effective thermal insulation are included in the homes to ensure low operating costs
